Do not choose filtration only by the number printed on the box. Think about:
- adult fish size
- stocking density
- feeding amount
- whether the fish dig or stir substrate
- how easy the filter is to clean
- whether the tank has enough water movement

Maintenance matters more than the label
A powerful filter can still fail if it is clogged, underserviced, or asked to carry too many fish too quickly. A modest filter can work well when the tank is lightly stocked and maintained consistently.
Watch for:
- cloudy water after feeding
- visible waste buildup
- weak flow
- ammonia or nitrite readings
- fish gasping or hanging near high-flow areas
